Oranges first reached the New World in 1493 with Christopher Columbus. Contrary to exaggerated claims during numerous “booms,” developing and cultivating citrus is truly hard work. Melrose has a rich history in the citrus industry. Moreover, citrus is part of Florida’s image of sunshine, health, and great living. We stopped by Riddling Groves Family Farm recently and enjoyed their terrific citrus stand on SR 26. Mr. Riddling displayed dozens of artifacts discovered at their farm and orchards—Herty turpentine pots, a pocket watch, brown jugs, Coca-Cola bottles with “Gainesville” stamped on the bottom, historic quackery bottles, and even a steering column from a Ford Model A.
