Melrose Boy Scout Troop 146 recently installed sitting benches and signs for the historic settlement of Banana, Florida. The signs indicate: Site of Two-Story Grist Mill Building Orange Springs to Starke Road and Bridge Remains Grist Mill Wheel Site of Banana Post Office and General Store Eagle Scout candidate Nick Vallance designed, built, and led the Troop during the entire process of constructing and installing the amenities to the historic mill site.
The settlement of Banana pre-dates Melrose. Learn more about Banana from Jimmy Price (1926-2021) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKH8uCuhtVI
Historic Melrose, Inc is truly grateful to Nick and salutes his tremendous service to the lake area. HMI has enjoyed terrific support from Scouting including a Banana cleanup by Eagle Scout Lake Beck, St. John the Fisherman cemetery cleanup and restoration by Eagle Scout Ricky Vallance, and several fence, landscaping, and preservation projects at the historic Homemaker’s Club by Eagle Scouts Kenny Booth, Logan Curtis, and Damien Walter.
